I was a little apprehensive about meeting Kermit (now Kermie) after losing my 14yr old Maltese X only four months prior. But the connection was instant and when I crouched down to say hello Kermie rested his head on my shoulder and that was it. He was ours.
My partner was working FIFO so didn’t meet Kermie until three weeks later. By that stage Kermie and I had such a bond, it was a challenge for Geoff and Kermie to make a connection. After some help from GAWA’s behaviourist things got a bit easier.
Kermie was super chilled and slept ALL the time. He wasn’t too fussed about eating a lot or wanting to go for walks… until 8 months later when Olive came along. We realised at that point he was probably depressed as a solo hound and the guilt kicked in that we should’ve got a second one sooner.
Kermie’s personality really started to come out once Olive settled in but it took Olive a lot longer. She was super timid and jumped at any sound. After about 12-18mths we really noticed a change in her and she started to become really playful and puppy-like.
Kermie and Olive are like chalk and cheese but they have the most beautiful friendship. Olive gets SO excited to see us even if we’ve only been out for 10mins. She’s food obsessed and loves to turn on the pleading eyes when the fridge is open. Kermie’s a total goofball with an internal 4.30am alarm clock and isn’t shy about letting us know that he wants a cuddle and a blanket put over him.
These two have brought so much joy to our lives and we can’t imagine life without them
