When my partner and I first moved out of share houses and into our own rental my first demand, I mean, our first decision was to adopt a dog. I had always grown up with dogs in my house and all our previous housemates had dogs. A dog is what makes a home and I loved coming home to a dog so happy to see me. It was just what dog… I knew I wanted a rescue, but gosh it was tough deciding which one. One day I saw a virally video of chattering greyhound and we were sold!
We adopted Rex in Feb 2018, after stalking Greyhound Adoptions WA and their markets for months. The grey we met at the markets was quiet, shy and didn’t love crowds. He kept leaning on me so I thought it meant he liked me, really he just wanted to leave, however, I was in love.
It’s taken Rex a few years to really open up; to become like that chattering grey I first saw. He was scared of strangers, wouldn’t take food / treats from us, he won’t sleep on the couch with me etc. Rex only recently started getting on the bed if I’m in it (he loooooves sleeping on it when we are out though!). And most of all it took him 2 years for us to get a really, really good chatter – now he won’t stop! It was worth the wait. My partner and I have an ongoing joke – Rex’s nickname is ‘The Dud’ – I swear it’s endearing! It is because he is very different to the greyhounds we saw in real life and on Instagram. But he is our Dud, our whole heart, and our best friend and I wouldn’t change him for the world.
A huge thank you to Holly for sharing your “Success Story” with Greyhound Adoptions WA.
