We are so lucky to have two beautiful hounds from Greyhound Adoptions WA.
In 2017 we returned to Perth from living over east and travelling. We desperately wanted to foster a dog but were renting a small inner-city apartment so we weren’t sure if we could.
I used to walk dogs at the RSPCA and absolutely loved walking any greyhounds who found themselves at the shelter as they were always so calm and loving. I especially loved how they’d lean up against me. I had heard they could make good apartment dogs so I enquired with Greyhound Adoptions WA about fostering.
Our first three foster hounds were gorgeous big happy-go-lucky boys. We could have adopted any and all of them but I was determined to keep fostering. The boys all found loving homes and we still keep in contact with their families which is so lovely.
Then along came Shirley. She was our fourth foster and first female. Shirley was a bit anxious and very particular. She liked things a certain way. When GAWA told us someone was interested in her, we realised we just couldn’t let her go in case another family didn’t “get her” the same way we felt we did. So we signed the paperwork and she’s been our family member ever since.
In 2020 we saw Walt go up for adoption after being owned by someone for a couple of years already. Walt came with a reputation for being a gentle giant and he really is. We weren’t looking for a second dog but there was something about this sweet nearly-8-year-old.
Along with our human kids, Shirley and Walt make our family complete. We love their companionship, cuddles, quirks and getting out and about with them. Our striking big dogs are real conversation starters and we love meeting other members of the pet greyhound community or educating others about what incredible pets they make.
A huge thank you to Sophie for sharing your “Success Story” with Greyhound Adoptions WA.
