Success Story: DelBoy

This is DelBoy (originally “Dwert”)! I mean does he look like a Dwert!

Having suffered a serious work injury has left me permanently disabled and need to use a walker to mobilise, even very short distances. For a very long time, I lost all confidence in going out by myself due to feeling extremely vulnerable. As I discovered, not every dog can walk next to a mobility aid because they have a fear of getting their paws stood on, but not DelBoy!

He was more than happy to walk alongside me. Plus, so many people actually wanted to stop and chat with us! Complete strangers would walk up to us and ask if they could say hello to my “Service Dog“. Many would ask how long it took to train my stunningly beautiful and well-mannered mobility assistance dog! Well actually, about 5 minutes because he’s a greyhound, he is naturally like this!

I also quickly became aware of the cult-like mentality which comes with having a greyhound. Such as the urge to drop everything because you have spotted a greyhound in the distance who you just have to say hello to, having phone storage space full of photos of greyhounds, having a wardrobe full of greyhound coats, PJs, snoods, woollen neck warmers (with matching bow ties of course!).

DelBoy is a regular at Rockingham Sunday Market. Always dressed to impress, of course. as well as having his pocket money in his own purse which he wears round his neck. He goes straight to the Toy Man stall for his teddy bears, then to the dog treat stall where he chooses his own treats, and enjoys a pupachino (yes he does pay for them all himself!). On our way home, we make a stop to the ‘Magic Window’! For those of you not familiar with this phenomenon, its other name is McDonalds drive-thru. From his perspective we drive up to this window, and food magically appears from it, and not just any food, chimkin! If that’s not magic, then I don’t know what is!

❤️ A huge thank you to Tiffany for sharing your “Success Story” with Greyhound Adoptions WA.
