Success Story: Freckles

Marcello & I moved into our first home together in 2018, the house was very empty & boring without a dog. Marcello wasn’t keen on the idea of introducing a dog into the family as he’s never had dogs in his life. I thought it would be a great idea to take Marcello to one of GAWA’s weekend adoption events to ask questions. Marcello didn’t even get past the questions before falling in love with Freckles at first meet. I suggested we take things slowly as he may not be a great fit for our lifestyle. A week later, Freckles…Read moreSuccess Story: Freckles

Success Story: Scout

We adopted Scout over a year ago and she’s become such an important part of our lives. When we first brought her home, we were a little nervous about how she would adapt to her new life. She settled in wonderfully and we fell in love with her affectionate and playful personality immediately. Scouts very food motivated, so that’s been helpful in helping her learn new tricks. She’s mastered “speak,” “lay down,” “go to bed,” and “touch” (though the execution of said tricks might depend on how stubborn she is on the day!) She’s got her quirks; our favourite being…Read moreSuccess Story: Scout

Success Story: Jet

I adopted our boy Jet (previously Tommo) back in September 2018. He had originally been placed with a family in Safety Bay, but their cats couldn’t cope so he came to me unexpectedly. I was expecting I would have to wait quite some time for a cat-friendly greyhound. He never raced but did train. He is such a silly billy and often comes out with the GSOD (greyhound scream of death). He settled in very easily except for getting me up at 4am in the beginning. Now I have to get him up! His first night with us he slept…Read moreSuccess Story: Jet

Success Story: Ivy

I was sent 7 month old Iris’s profile by a friend in June 2022 and she joined our family that weekend. She became known as ‘Ivy’ quite quickly as my brain kept calling her ‘Ibis’ which would result in her being nicknamed ‘the bin chicken’. Ivy’s eye was injured as a baby which left her half blind but that doesn’t stop her, she spends her days playing with her big sister Cass the Border Collie and following her cats around the house. Ivy is a fantastic speed noodle who’s legs definitely move faster than her brain, she loves to do…Read moreSuccess Story: Ivy

Success Story: Kermie and Olive

I was a little apprehensive about meeting Kermit (now Kermie) after losing my 14yr old Maltese X only four months prior. But the connection was instant and when I crouched down to say hello Kermie rested his head on my shoulder and that was it. He was ours. My partner was working FIFO so didn’t meet Kermie until three weeks later. By that stage Kermie and I had such a bond, it was a challenge for Geoff and Kermie to make a connection. After some help from GAWA’s behaviourist things got a bit easier. Kermie was super chilled and slept…Read moreSuccess Story: Kermie and Olive

Success Story: Finnegan

Finnegan came to us for a trial when my baby boy, Sonny, was 9 months old. Greyhound Adoptions WA carefully selected Finnegan for us based on the fact he’d been living with a family with children. Why adopt when I had a young baby? I have never been without a dog, even as a young child, and we had suddenly lost our beautiful greyhound, Lucy some months before (who we also adopted from GAWA). I could tell immediately how sweet and precious Finnegan was. The day we met him, he stood over and saved a little bird in our garden.…Read moreSuccess Story: Finnegan

Success Story: Millie and Vinnie

After our beautiful Irish Wolfhound and our Scottish Deerhound crossed the rainbow bridge in the last 8 months, we were left with a devastating hound-size hole in our hearts and homes. Life seemed pretty pointless without a dog and after 5 long weeks we decided to take a gamble and foster Millie. A scared bundle of legs, nose, and big eyes was delivered and we were in love at first sight. 5 weeks on , that same overwhelmed, shivering bundle has emerged into ‘Millie the Minx’. She is full of life and delighting in learning how to be a dog.…Read moreSuccess Story: Millie and Vinnie

Success Story: Pip

Pippy was was an emergency foster and we quickly went from being on a foster waiting list to meeting our soon-to-be forever little girl. Upon meeting Pip, she was so sweet straight away, and we had to teach her how yo use the stairs in our apartment. After a few days of training, with a lot of cheese and some amazing help from my greyhound friends, she mastered up and down the stairs in only a week. We had Pip for 3 weeks before we decided to adopt her. Pip was a huge cuddle bug from day one, but a…Read moreSuccess Story: Pip

Success Story: DelBoy

This is DelBoy (originally “Dwert”)! I mean does he look like a Dwert! Having suffered a serious work injury has left me permanently disabled and need to use a walker to mobilise, even very short distances. For a very long time, I lost all confidence in going out by myself due to feeling extremely vulnerable. As I discovered, not every dog can walk next to a mobility aid because they have a fear of getting their paws stood on, but not DelBoy! He was more than happy to walk alongside me. Plus, so many people actually wanted to stop and…Read moreSuccess Story: DelBoy

Success Story: Boots

I “rescued ” Boots on march 16, 2019.I did not want a dog. I had a very busy life at the time. Work. Kids, sports etc.My daughter, Sarah, wanted a dog.We compromised.I admit to knowing very little about Greyhounds until 2019. When Boots moved him. He was so shy and nervous. He just didn’t know what to do with himself. It took him 2 years to bark. We talk about how we adopt them. We rescue them. But we don’t talk about how they rescue us. Boots saved my life. I had some serious medical and mental health issues over…Read moreSuccess Story: Boots
